Baghdad : Ten Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the province of Diyala on Monday, Iraqi police say.
The attack, which took place in Mindili, 110km north-east of Baghdad, also wounded 13 soldiers.
The US military blamed the killings on al-Qaeda in Iraq.
Al-Qaeda has tried to establish itself in Diyala since being driven out of western Iraq and Baghdad by Sunni councils and coalition troops.
Meanwhile, the wife of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Hiro Ibrahim Ahmed, escaped unhurt after a bomb exploded near her motorcade in Baghdad.
Four of her bodyguards were injured in the attack.
