London : An Indian-born man was under police guard with severe burns in a hospital in the Scottish city of Glasgow Tuesday after allegedly trying to set fire to a car in which his two children were found stabbed to death.
Paul and Jay Ross, aged six and two, were found dead in a blood-splattered car Saturday afternoon near a quiet country lane just outside Glasgow.
In a case that has hit the headlines in the national media in Britain, the two children were said to have been stabbed repeatedly and put into the boot of the car.
Their father Ashok Kalyanjee was found by the car with very serious burns after having tried to set the vehicle on fire, police said.
Kalyanjee is reported to be in a critical condition at Glasgow Royal Infirmary hospital. He is under police guard.
The man allegedly tried to take his own life by cutting his throat and then setting fire to the car while he was inside it.
Kalyanjee, a former post office worker who was described as a taxi driver living in the Cowcaddens area of central Glasgow, had separated from the children’s mother Giselle Ross and had weekend visiting rights to his sons.
He was supposed to have returned the boys to their mother by Saturday lunchtime and a search began when he failed to turn up.
Giselle Ross was said to be distraught Tuesday while Kalyanjee’s mother Maya Devi was reported to be “losing her mind”.
A neighbour said: “Maya is just so upset. I think she is losing her mind. She is crying round the clock. She has lost a whole family.”
Another witness said the elderly woman had been walking the streets asking people if they had seen her son. “She was wailing and crying and begging for help. She couldn’t accept that her son could be involved.”
In a statement issued through police, Ross said: “Paul and Jay were beautiful boys who were well-loved by all the family and everyone who knew them.
“They did not deserve to die. Paul wasn’t even allowed to play outside in case he came to any harm. Both boys loved their mum – they were real mummy’s boys.”
According to unconfirmed reports, Kalyanjee was a devout Christian who was trying to overcome drink and gambling problems.
