A dozen militants killed in Afghanistan

Kabul : A dozen suspected militants were killed in three separate operations in southern and southeastern parts of Afghanistan, the Afghan government claimed on Sunday.

A statement from the Interior Ministry here said four militants were killed in the country’s volatile Helmand province during a joint operation by the Afghan and NATO troops on Saturday night. The operation was conducted in Musa Qala district, which was captured by Taliban militants earlier last year. However, the district was recaptured by the NATO and Afghan troops after ten months from the Taliban. In a separate incident, the ministry said the Afghan police and Afghan National Army supported by the coalition troops killed five suspected militants in Zurmat distirct of the southeastern Paktia province on Saturday. The two statements said the troops also seized arms and ammunitions during the two operations.

In yet another operation in Khost province, also located in the southeastern zone, the government says the local and foreign troops killed three militants.

Spokesman for the regional security forces in the southeastern zone Gul Mohammad said four more militants were killed in the same operation, he informed.
