Jakarta : An earthquake with magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale rocked Sumatra island in the western part of Indonesia Monday, but there was no report of damage or casualties, the government meteorology agency said.
The quake struck at 11.58 a.m. with its epicentre 96 km southwest of Bengkulu province and 18 km in depth, an official of the agency said.
Indonesia sits on a vulnerable earthquake zone, the so-called “the Pacific Ring of Fire”, where two continental plates meet and cause frequent seismic and volcanic movement.
