Tehran : The Islamic Republic of Iran has strongly protested a UK court ruling unbanning the terrorist Mujahedin Khalq Organization in that country.
Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs Mehdi Safari summoned British Ambassador to Tehran Geoffry Adams to inform him of Iran’s protest against the ruling of an court of appeal in London.
Referring to terrorist activities of the MKO and its numerous crimes over the past three decades including bombing and assassination of senior Iranian nationals including Brigadier General Ali Sayyad Shirazi in 2004, he called the ruling of the court of appeal in London as politically-motivated and unacceptable.
He also called on the UK government to reverse such a ruling which might leave negative impacts on both sides’ relations.
According to the Information and Press Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Safari said the recent verdict of the British court is regarded as a double-standard policy on the issue of terrorism and as an improper act by a European government which claims to be involved in the campaign against terrorism.
The Britain government is held responsible for such a ruling, he said and urged the UK ambassador to convey Iran’s protest to his country’s high ranking officials.
The British ambassador, for his part, explained that the policy of the British government regarding the MKO has not changed and underlined that “We still consider the MKO as a terrorist group.” He said he would convey the views of the Iranian government and people to British officials.
The UK foreign secretary has termed the terrorist activities of MKO grouplet as very ‘shameful, he said, adding that London’s official policy is to avoid establishing contacts with the group.
