Beijing : Nearly 29,000 people have been reported dead so far in the earthquake tragedy Monday of the Chinese province of Sichuan, the State Council Information Department said.
The number of wounded has reached 198,347, the source confirmed.
The provincial government has placed the number of people killed at 28,300, and another 10,600 are still trapped under destroyed buildings.
The confirmed death toll in all affected areas rose Saturday to 28,881, according to official figures.
At least 15.6 million apartments and homes were damaged or destroyed by the powerful quake of 7.8 degrees on the Richter scale, the Information Department added.
The quake was centered in Wenchuan district, about 99 miles northwast of Chendu, the capital of Sichuanprovince.
