In a statement issued Sunday, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Staffan de Mistura, described the attack on an embassy convoy of vehicles in the north of the city as outrageous.

“Attacking foreign diplomats in Iraq aims to discourage normal diplomatic relations between Iraq and the international community, but will not succeed as we have witnessed increased diplomatic activities here in Iraq in the last few months,” he said.

Mr. de Mistura added that he had conveyed these sentiments to Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq, Hassan Qazimi Ghomi, during a meeting at UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) offices in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Iran Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki condemned the terrorist attack on the Iranian embassy personnel in Baghdad and urged the Iraqi government to step up efforts to identify the culprit of the incident.

“The occupiers are the main reason behind the increase in acts of violence in Iraq,” he concluded.

Iranian embassy staff, including two diplomats and two guards, who were on their way to a Shiite shrine in the northern Baghdad neighborhood of Kazimiyah, came under attack on Thursday.
