New Delhi : Terming the union government’s response to Chinese incursions in Sikkim as weak, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday demanded that the government summon the Chinese ambassador here and lodge a protest.

“There have been repeated aggressive designs of China, first in Arunachal Pradesh and now in the finger area region of Sikkim, but the union government’s response has been weak,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.

“When the prime minister visited Arunachal Pradesh recently he did not visit Tawang, which China claims is part of their territory. We demand that the Chinese ambassador be summoned by the government immediately and a formal protest lodged on the incursions in Sikkim,” Prasad said.

Finger area is located north of the Guanyong province in Sikkim and it overlooks the strategic area of Sora funnel, thus making it important for the security of the country. Chinese army patrol vehicles have made incursions into the area this week.

“China has been providing military aid to Pakistan… even the latter’s Shaheen missile is completely supported by China,” Prasad said.

“China thinks the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) survives with Left party (which is pro-China) support, so it would not respond (to China’s aggression),” Prasad said.

“BJP feels this is not in national interest,” he added.

Quoting the prime minister, Prasad said: “The PM has said that those behind the Jaipur blasts wanted to disrupt India-Pakistan relations. The recent events show Pakistan is making little effort in building relations. So the prime minister should be circumspect about what he says.”

BJP expressed the hope that external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee will take up the issues of terrorist camps in Pakistan, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s extradition to India and the recent firing by Pakistani troops in the Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir when he visits Pakistan this week.
