29 rebels of outlawed group surrender in NE India

By KUNA,

New Delhi : In the second such incident this month, as many as 29 insurgents of an outlawed rebel group have surrendered before the authorities in Indias Northeastern state of Tripura.

All the insurgents belonged to the banned Borok National Council of Tripura, a sister organisation of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), surrendered before the security forces in north Tripura Tuesday, Indo Asian News Service reported, quoting a police official.

“The surrendered insurgents were operating from the camps in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh,” the official said.

“The rebels have deserted the camps in Bangladesh few days back as they are frustrated with their lives in the jungles. There is resentment because rebel leaders lead a luxurious life in cities in Bangladesh while the activists have no food and shelter,” a statement, quoting Surjyaram Reang, a surrendered rebel, said.

Earlier on May 8, 41 NLFT insurgents had surrendered along with their families before the Indian security forces in Tripura. they were staying in camps at Aprang Chara and Simnapur in the Chittagong Hill Tracts area . Earlier 32 NLFT rebels had surrendered during March-April.
Tripura shares 856-km-long border with Bangladesh.

NLFT and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) are the two main rebel groups of Tripura. Leadership and cadres of both ATTF and NLFT are based in Bangladesh and operate from there.

India has been seeking their extradition for long. Last month, Bangladesh had deported NLFT leader Sujit Debbarma to Tripura, in the first ever case of handing over an insurgent to India.

The two outfits, whose total strength is of about 1,200 cadres, maintain close links with other insurgent groups from Indias Northeast.
