Indian students in Sichuan ‘safe’, embassy official

By IANS,

New Delhi : Indian students in the quake-hit southwestern Chinese province are in contact with the Indian mission and have not made any request to return home, an embassy official said Wednesday.

An embassy official in Beijing told IANS that personnel from the embassy, as well as from the Indian consulate at Guangzhou, were in Sichuan province – the epicentre of the devastating earthquake May 12 that left over 40,000 dead.

“We have been in touch with all the members of the Indian community and they are all safe,” he said. The official added that they had not got any reports of students requesting to go back home.

Another official said the Chinese ministry of education, as well as the Sichuan University authorities, had separately communicated that Indian students were safe after the earthquake.

“There have been several aftershocks following the main quake and as a precaution, all residents are told to come out in the open after each warning,” he said, adding that all students later go back to their accommodation.

He said the aftershocks have petered down in the last two days.
