New York : Iran has expressed its solidarity with Iraq in the latter’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the war-torn country, news agency IRNA reported Wednesday.
“Tehran has supported and will support the efforts of the Iraqi government to establish peace and security there,” Iranian envoy to United Nations Mohammad Khazaei Tuesday told a meeting of the world body on rebuilding of Iraq.
“Investment on reconstruction, security and stability of Iraq would benefit the entire region,” Khazaei told the meeting.
Expressing his government’s keenness to deepen ties with Baghdad, the envoy said the visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Iraq was “an indication to the will of the Iranian leaders to boost friendly ties with Baghdad”.
He praised the Iraqi government and people for their efforts to strengthen rule of law and establishment of peace and security in that country, and said that “settlement of the problems is in need of national unity and solidarity of the Iraqi people” and the assistance of the international community, particularly the neighbouring states.
Condemning terrorist acts in Iraq, he said Iran has been a victim of Iraqi terrorism in the past few years, referring to attacks on several members of Iranian embassy in Baghdad.
Citing several UN reports on the critical situation in Iraq, he said Iran attaches great importance to security in its neighbouring country.
Khazaei also condemned allegations of Iran’s interference in Iraq’s domestic affairs.
