Samajwadi Party offers to work on consensus on n-deal

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Samajwadi Party Thursday said it was willing to work towards building a political consensus on the India-US nuclear deal.

“We will support the government on the nuclear deal if fresh facts come up. We are always ready to work towards a consensus,” the party’s national general secretary Amar Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a dinner hosted by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on its fourth anniversary.

The nuclear deal has been in limbo in the absence of political consensus as the main opposition Bharatitya Janata Party (BJP) as well as the Left parties that prop up the UPA government have opposed it.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made a special gesture of friendship towards the Samajwadi Party leader by going and sitting with him after the dinner.

Amar Singh, who complained of being ignored by the Congress leadership till recently, made a late but dramatic entry at the event in the evening.
