Gaza City : Israel killed at least five Palestinians and detained 25 people in an incursion into the Gaza Strip on Sunday.
Hamas wanted to stop the incursion near the Sufa crossing in the south, where Israeli forces were carrying out raids on houses.
Islamic Jihad said two of its men had died in fighting east of Bureij, in central Gaza.
Near Sufa, the Israeli military said troops were approached by the resistance gunmen.
Israel carried an air strike on houses in parallel with the Israeli tanks and artillery.
A soldier was wounded in the clashes, the Israeli army said.
The official Palestinian news agency said the Israelis detained at least 25 people during the raid.
