The commission, constituted for fresh probe of the riots which claimed 2000 innocent lives mostly Muslims, gave this observation on 24th May while meeting with a delegation of Aqualiyat Golband Morcha (Minority United Front) led by its president Bari Azmi.

Justice NN Singh said that the Commission is determined to give justice to the victims of Bhalpur riots. The commission will soon give necessary directions to concerned officials, Singh said.

Expressing satisfaction on yesterday’s assurance given by the commission, Azmi said the government move has rekindled hope in victims. He said the Morcha will do what it can to ensure justice done to the victims.

Bhagalpur riots took place in the ’secular’ government of Congress in 1989. For the next 15 years, there was another ’secular’ government of Lalu Prasad Yadav in Bihar whose main selling point to Muslims was that it did not allow another Bhagalpur to happen. But what about justice to the victims? Well, the victims were given pittance in the name of compensation. So much so, Rabri Devi in 2001 stopped the process of identification of riot victims who were denied compensation previously.
