Lebanese presidential election begins

Beirut : Lebanon’s lawmakers gathered in the parliament headquarters Sunday to elect army chief Michel Suleiman as the country’s new president, local LBC reported.

The parliamentary session began at 5 p.m. (1400 GMT) with the recitation of the names of the present members of parliament.

Parliament speaker Nabih Berri opened the session by calling for a moment’s silence to remember the countrymen and MPs died in the long-running political crisis.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, and a delegation from the U.S. Congress are among those watching the session, said the report.
