The recent international donor conference in Yangon, gathering 52 countries, UN agencies and non government organizations, left relief offers worth nearly $100 million (63 million euros), which will go to the 2.5 million victims and infrastructure rehabilitation.

The European Union will earmark another $100 million for this purpose, while China vowed $11 million, Australia ($25 million), the Philippines ($20 million) and South Korea ($2.5 million).

During the meeting, Ban Ki-moon said it will take six months for this “humanitarian challenge” in relief operations to feed and help the victims.

This view opposes Yangon’s approach to give priority to reconstruction and consider relief-work-time over.

In opinion of UN Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes, “the crisis assistance phase is still an emergency.”

Prime Minister of Myanmar, Gen. Thein Sein, said his country unconditionally welcomes international assistance.
