Hot summer sun bakes after spell of rain

New Delhi : After a few spells of cooling rain in parts of north India, the summer temperature began to rise, making people reach out for their caps and umbrellas to avoid the hot sun. Maharashtra was hard hit by the heat, with Nagpur recording a scorching maximum of 44 degrees Celsius.

Bhopal was another hot city Tuesday, with the mercury touching 41.4 degrees Celsius and no trace of any rainfall.

Meanwhile, the met office said that the annual monsoon is expected to hit south-western India in a couple of days.

Despite heavy showers in the capital Monday, it was a hot and humid day Tuesday. Air conditioners were again welcome after having been mostly off for the past few days, an unusual occurrence in the month of May in Delhi. Ice cream vans and cool drink shops did brisk business.

Overcast conditions continued all over north India Tuesday. The weather office has predicted squalls and thundershowers in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and adjoining areas until Thursday.

Tuesday’s maximum temperature in the capital was 36.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal but three notches above Monday’s temperature. The minimum was 23.2 degrees, four degrees below what is normal for this period of the season.

The weather in the metros of Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata was hot and humid, while in Ahmedabad the temperature was over 41 degrees Celsius.
