Palanpur (Gujarat) : Eight people arrested in a case of communal violence in Gujarat in 2002 were Tuesday remanded to three-day police custody.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had arrested the eight people from Sardarpur village in Vijapur taluka of Mehsana district, about 150 km from Ahmedabad, Monday.
The SIT team led by police inspector G.V. Barot sought seven-day police custody but Vijapur sub-divisional magistrate D.V. Shah granted three-day custody.
Those arrested are Joitaram Ramabhai Patel, Natavarbhai Kachrabhai Patel, Ashwin Baladevbhai Rawabhai Patel, Kanubhai Rawabhai Patel, Dayabhai Vanabhai Patel, Ramesh Kachrabhai Patel, Babulal Vanabhai Patel and Babubhai Kanjibhai Patel.
Earlier, they were taken to different spots in the village where 33 people were burnt alive March 1, 2002 during the communal violence in which 1,169 people were killed across the state.
