Larijani, who in his former role represented Iran in international talks over the country’s controversial nuclear program, won 232 votes out of a total of 263 ballots cast.

In a speech just after being elected, Larijani said his country’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations nuclear watchdog, could be reviewed following the agency’s recent report on Iran’s nuclear program.

The IAEA report released on Monday said Iran’s alleged studies into making nuclear warheads remain a matter of serious concern, and that Tehran must provide more information on its “missile-related activities”.
