Maliki was speaking in a ceremony Tuesday marking the reopening of the Serafiya bridge, which was exposed to a car bomb attack in April last year, killing people on the bridge and forced the drowning of others in the Tigris river.

“We are gathering in this place to rebuild this Iraqi iconic symbol,” said Maliki.

The bombing of the Serafiya bridge is a message to Iraq and Iraqis that terrorists wanted to destroy this country which was built by its sons, he said.

“Iraq will return strong by the hands of its people and will achieve many successes in all domains,” said the prime minister.

The Serafiya bridge is over 60 years’ old and is the second oldest in Baghdad.
