Cambodia: Tight Security in Legislative Polls

Phnom Penh : Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen said his government will guarantee a high level of security during legislative elections in July 27.

He called on party leaders and law and order officials to observe the law and favour an electoral process that will not affect the country’s sociopolitical stability.

Hun Sen, who is also the vice president of the majority Cambodian

People’s Party, said drastic measures will me taken against those who

violate legislations in force.

He said CPP will form a government on its own, ruling out the possibility to maintain the current coalition with monarchical FUNCINPEC. However, he gave no hint regarding steps to be taken if CPP fails to get most of the 123 seats to be up for grab.

The Electoral Committee said 11 political parties will vie for over eight million possible votes in this country.
