Singapore Opens Asia-Pacific Summit

Singapore : The Security Summit 2008 was opened Friday in this city by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in presence of military chiefs from 27 countries of Asia-Pacific region.

Also known as Shangri-La talk the three-day meeting was organized by the International Strategic Research Institute (IISS) with headquarters in London.

Sources from the organizing commission told the press that the meeting will also debate defense policy issues in times of instability.

The participants will also debate on climate change and power security in the region.

The US Defense Secretary is expected to deliver a speech on Saturday over challenges of stability in the region.

Meanwhile the deputy chief of the General Staff of China Peoples Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian will speak about the future of eastern Asia security.

The Defense Ministers, heads of General Staff and representatives from Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippinesand the NATO will attend the meeting, among other participants.
