22 killed in China landslides, mud flows

By Xinhua,

Kunming (China) : At least 22 people were killed and more than 45 reported missing in landslides and mud-rock flows in southwest China’s Yunnan province, officials said Monday.

More than 41,000 people in Chuxiong Yi district and the provincial capital Kunming were affected by the landslides following heavy rain over the past two days, according to Yunnan’s civil affairs department.

A department official said reports of casualties from different areas of the province were reaching the capital and it was too early to get the exact toll.

Initial investigations showed that more than 1,000 homes collapsed and some 2,500 were damaged in the disaster, he said.

Weather forecast indicated that heavy rain would continue in the area for the next one day or two, hampering relief efforts.
