12 killed in two bomb strikes in Baghdad

Baghdad : Eleven civilians and a policeman were killed and up to 26 injured in bomb explosions in two neighbourhoods of the Iraqi capital Tuesday, an interior ministry source said.

An explosive charge hidden in a vegetable stall in a popular market in Mashtal detonated in the afternoon, killing seven people and wounding 18 others, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The blast destroyed several nearby stalls, shops and cars, the source said.

In another incident, another bomb went off in the Qahira neighbourhood in northern Baghdad, killing four civilians and wounding eight, the source added.

Earlier in the day, a policeman was killed and three injured when gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the capital’s al-Jadida district, the police said.

Also in the day, two policemen were injured when a bomb planted in their car detonated while they were heading for their work in Baghdad’s central district of Karrada, they said.

A bystander was also wounded by the blast, they added.
