“Considering the particular political situation prevailing in the country that arose after the signing of the India-US civil nuclear deal and the global economic recession, both the factions decided to join together,” Veerendrakumar told reporters.

The decision to come together by the two groups would be conveyed to the Election Commission, JD-S head H.D. Deve Gowda said.

The party also reconstituted its national executive by inducting five Kerala legislators. Senior JD-S leader from Kerala, Varghese George, has been appointed as party general secretary and Veerendrakumar will continue as the parliamentary leader of the party.

The Veerendrakumar-led faction is part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala.

The members of the faction had left the JD-S to protest former Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s decision to form a ministry in the state along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in January 2006.
