Lucknow : The son of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator was arrested Thursday for running down three people in an Uttar Pradesh town, the police said. The dead included a woman and a six-year-old girl.
The incident took place late Wednesday evening in the Akhandnagar locality in Sultanpur, headquarters of the district by the same name, about 90 km from here. Rakesh Ranjan, son of BSP legislator Bhagelu Ram Nishad, allegedly hit three people who were on a bicycle.
“According to the complaint, the deceased, Sigturam, Hasraji Devi and a six-year-old girl Roshani, were hit from behind by the WagonR car driven by Ranjan,” Sultanpur Superintendent of Police D.C. Mishra told IANS.
The car then banged into a tree. Incensed residents set it on fire.
Ranjan reportedly escaped from the spot.
When the police reached the spot, “the residents also pelted stones at the police and two constables were injured”, Mishra added.
Rakesh was arrested in the wee hours of Thursday.
“We have booked him under sections 304 A (causing death by negligence) 338 (causing grievous hurt) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code,” Inspector Uma Shanker Uttam of Akhandnagar police station told IANS.
The bodies were handed over to the family members after autopsy, he added.
