20 labourers missing after bridge collapse

By IANS,

Srinagar : More than 20 labourers were reported missing Sunday after a bridge on which they were working collapsed into the Jhelum river in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The authorities launched a search for the missing men after the accident near the border town of Uri, 92 km from here.

Police said the Parampila bridge broke up in the middle and plunged into the river when several labourers were working on it.

“We have recovered two injured labourers and are trying to locate more than 20 others. Many are feared dead,” Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Jain told IANS on telephone.

The labourers, including Kashmiris and non-Kashmiris, were giving finishing touches to the bridge when it caved in, witnesses said.
