Quake in northern Indonesia leaves 2 dead

Jakarta : Two people have been killed and 25 injured in a 7.7-magnitude quake in northern Indonesia, a local radio station reported on Monday, citing the Health Ministry’s crisis center.

“One person was killed and 23 injured in the Gorontalo province. In the neighboring Central Sulawesi province one person was also killed and two injured,” the radio reported. “Hundreds of houses have been destroyed.”

The first shock, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale with an epicenter 138 km (86 miles) northwest of the city of Gorontalo, occurred shortly after midnight local time. It was followed some 30 minutes later by a 6.0-magnitude tremor.

Local authorities issued a tsunami warning which was canceled an hour later.
