Srinagar : Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in Srinagar Friday because separatists had called for a march to the Jamia Mosque in the old city area, the police said.
“I said we had imposed restrictions in the city to protect civilian life because of disruptions and protests planned by the separatists and not because we had been expecting any major strike by the militants,” B. Srinivas, inspector general of police (Kashmir Zone), told IANS here.
All educational institutions, markets, government offices and banks here remained closed and public and private transport were also off the roads in view of the restrictions imposed. There was heavy deployment of paramilitary and police personnel.
Authorities had imposed restrictions in the city in the wake of an attack carried out by separatist guerrillas in north Kashmir’s Sopore town Thursday evening in which an election office was attacked and a police officer critically wounded.
