Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Batista Tagme Na Wai said at least two presidential bodyguards were killed in the assault, apparently addressed to assassinate Vieira.

The attackers were soldiers. “Five have been arrested and the situation is under control,” he told reporters.

Interior Minister Cipriano Cassama said “investigations will reveal who are to blame for this attack”.

Authorities were investigating who was behind the assault, which followed the announcement by electoral officials that the former ruling PAIGC party had won a clear parliamentary majority in the legislative polls held on Nov 16.

Vieira’s home was attacked just over a day after a major political rival, opposition leader and former president Koumba Yala, had rejected the election results as rigged.
