Grenade blast kills three in Russia

St. Petersburg : Three people, including a child, in a car were killed when a hand grenade, being carried by one of the passengers, exploded near a underground railway station in the Russian city early Tuesday, the police said.

The grenade exploded when the car, which was carrying three people was nearing the Udelnaya metro station, in the city’s north, when the incident took place.

“When the car reached the metro station, the blast went off. A grenade exploded,” a police officer.

According to preliminary information, the grenade was in the possession of one of the passengers, he said, adding that they had no clue why the ammunition was being carried in the car.

The officer, however, ruled out a terror link with the incident.

Two passengers, including the child, were killed on the spot and a woman later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, he said. The driver was stated to be in a critical condition.

Service at the metro station was unaffected, the officer said.

Police were investigating the case.
