“The incident, believed to be case of honour killing, took place late Tuesday night in Chauhatta village in Muzaffarnagar district,” P.D. Paulson district police chief told IANS.

The brother, who has been arrested, confessed that he killed his sister to “safeguard the honour of his family”.

According to the police, the brother caught his sister while she was trying to elope with a youth of the same locality Tuesday night.

On Nov 14, a similar incident was reported from the Sarai Rasoolpur village in Muzaffarnagar, some 400 km from Lucknow.

Muzaffarnagar, a western district of Uttar Pradesh, accounts for 25 percent of honour killing cases in the country, according to a study done by the Delhi-based Indian Population Statistics Survey (IPSS) in mid-2007.
