Pakistan releases 101 Indian prisoners

Islamabad : Pakistan Wednesday released about one hundred and one Indian prisoners as a goodwill gesture, and the prisoners were handed over to Indian authorities at Indo-Pak eastern Wagha border.

The released prisoners included at least 99 Indian fishermen, who had been detained for illegal fishing into Pakistani territorial waters since October 2006.

According interior ministry sources, after release of 101 prisoners, 355 are still being held in various jails of the country.

Pakistan and India, the two South Asian rivals, frequently arrest each other’s fishermen for illegal fishing in their territorial waters. While thousands have been released on humanitarian basis by the two countries, hundreds are still in jail.
