During a special meeting convened at the AL headquarters in Cairo, the Foreign ministers tried to pave the way for talks among the 12 Palestinian groups, mainly the two most representative of them.

In this regard, they appealed to an understanding between the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), which controls the Gaza Strip since June 2007, and Al-Fatah, led by also President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas.

However, the Foreign ministers of the 22 AL members came up against an especially difficult situation after Abbas threatened to call early elections if Hamas failed to accept his proposal to talk and settle rivalries.

The PA Chief also triggered angry Hamas reaction after being declared by the Palestine Liberation Organization as president of the future Palestinian independent state, a post vacant since the death of Yasser Arafat four years ago.

As requested by the AL, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit presented a report with results, current state and prospects of efforts made by his country to achieve harmony among main Palestinian factions.

He also explained reasons leading his government to postpone a national Palestinian meeting originally scheduled for November 10 in Cairo, as well as the purpose to save the truce achieved between Hamas and Israel in June thanks to his mediatory efforts.

The impasse in the peace process with Israel and the critical situation in Gaza as a result of the merciless Israeli blockade were also discussed in the AL meeting.
