Police spokesman Mayajoy Rupini blamed the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) for the killings. The dead worker belonged to the National Project Construction Co (NPCC) in Dhalai district.

“The BSF men (77 Battalion) were guarding those working on the India-Bangladesh border fencing being constructed by NPCC when they got ambushed,” he said.

Two BSF personnel and an NPCC worker were injured in the attack.

Police and BSF officials rushed to the spot, 180 km north of Agartala, and launched a combing operation.

The NLFT and another proscribed outfit, the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), have been fighting for a sovereign Tripura for indigenous tribals.
