Sonia starts ramping up party machinery

By IANS,

New Delhi : With state and national elections round the corner, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is ramping up the party machinery.

Gandhi has issued a circular to all office-bearers to assess and strengthen the district- and block-level committees. She has also demanded a detailed report on vacant posts in the organising committees.

“The circular is to take stock of the party’s readiness through the length and breadth of the country,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said Sunday.

The circular is in line with the recommendations of the committee formed under the chairmanship of A.K. Antony that was tasked with an internal assessment of the party structure.

As part of preparations for the upcoming poll battles, the party is also working on the release of its election manifesto.

The landmark India-US nuclear deal is expected to figure prominently in the party’s list of achievements of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

“Although the party will focus on the initiatives taken in the field of education, agriculture and employment, there is no doubt that the main focus in the election campaign would be on the triumph of India-US civil nuclear agreement,” said Tiwari.

The party’s publicity committee is also reviving up. The committee has chosen Crayons, an ad agency, to launch its media and publicity blitzkrieg for the assembly and Lok Sabha polls.
