“All celebrations of Gandhi’s birthday are not just sentimental expressions but an act and declaration of faith and a call to action to address that we consider the causes of our despair and despondency,” said Mewa Ramgobin, Chairman of Gandhi Phoenix Settlement Trust.

Ramgobin, who is also an MP in the ruling ANC, was speaking at Gandhi Settlement Trust to mark the 139th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Settlement was started by Gandhi in South Africa in early 1900s, where he spent his early days and formulated his philosophy of Satyagraha.

The Gandhi Settlement event is the second such celebration in Durban over the past four days.
