Colombo : Sri Lanka Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithiripala Sirisena escaped unharmed Thursday from an attack in which one of his bodyguard died, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara reported.
An alleged suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam attacked the delegation of the Minister in Boralasgamuwa, 6 miles Colombo, according to Nanayakkara, injuring five people.
The Minister was returning to Colombo after having chaired a ceremony held at a rice plantation in Bandaragama. The suicide attacker was waiting for him in Boralasgamuwa.
Sirisena is secretary General of ruling Liberation Party of Sri Lanka, led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The attack took place an hour before Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Colombo, in a two-day visit to meet with highest authorities in the country.
