“Saleh al-Ugaily, a lawmaker from Sadr political movement, survived with wounds a booby trapped motorcycle explosion parked on a main road in the Habibiyah neighborhood when Ugaily’s convoy passed by,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The blast killed two of Ugaily’s bodyguards and wounded him and three others of his guards, along with damaging two of the convoy’s vehicles, the source said.

Also in eastern Baghdad, a roadside bomb explosion struck a traffic police patrol near the Mudhaffar Square in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City, killing a civilian and wounding two policemen and two bystanders, the source added.

The powerful blast also caused damages to one of the patrol’s vehicles and several nearby civilian cars, he said, adding that Iraqi security forces immediately sealed off the area to secure the scene.

Some of the Shiite-dominated neighborhoods in eastern Baghdad were scene of fierce clashes erupted in March between Sadr’s MahdiArmy loyal to the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces that left hundreds of people killed and injured.

Assassinations and bomb attacks have increased recently in Baghdad despite relative lull in violence during the past months.
