New Delhi : Ahead of the National Integration Council meeting on Monday, the Congress today upped its ante demanding a ban on Bajrang Dal, saying what the saffron outfit has done recently in some states was communal terrorism.
“Attacks on Christians in Orissa, Karnataka and MP are acts of communal terrorism and this was done in a deliberate and calculated manner,” Congress media department chief M Veerappa Moily told reporters here.
Asked about the agenda of the NIC meeting and the demand of former Prime Minister V P Singh for a ban on the militant saffron outfit, Moily said the NIC is seized of the matter and will take appropriate action.
Moily said the NIC cannot take a decision on banning an organisation but will deliberate on issues like communalism and terrorism.
“The issue (banning Bajrang Dal) is foremost in the mind of the Government of India,” the Congress leader said, adding that communalism was also a form of terrorism.
Moily said that in normal circumstances, the request for ban on an organisation is made by the state government as was the case of SIMI.
“In the case of Bajrang Dal, these BJP ruled states have not sent any recommendation,” he said.
On a question whether the government has sufficient evidence to ban the organisation, Moily said, “There is more than sufficient evidence”.
