The missile was launched at 11.24 a.m. (0724 GMT) by Russia’s Strategic Missile Force.

The Topol (SS-25 Sickle) is a single-warhead intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), with approximately the same size and shape as the US Minuteman ICBM.

The Topol missiles became operational in 1985. However, the missile is expected to be replaced by a new version of Topol-M (SS-27 Sickle B) missile in the future.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev witnessed the test launch at the Plesetsk space centre.
