New Delhi : The Samajwadi Party Thursday urged the Congress to check the growing unrest and discontent among Muslims in the country and to bring the minority community into the mainstream.
“Today Muslims are feeling alienated and marginalised. We have insisted that the Congress leaders make best efforts to bring them into the mainstream in order to restore their faith in the secular and democratic structure of our country,” Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh told reporters after a coordination committee meeting with the COngress here.
The main issues discussed at the meeting were a judicial probe into the Sep 19 Jamia Nagar shootout in which two suspected terrorists were killed, efforts to bring the Muslims into the mainstream as well as seat sharing between the two parties for the Lok Sabha elections.
“We have once again demanded a judicial probe into the Jamia Nagar encounter. However, the Congress was silent on the issue,” Amar Singh said.
The controversial shootout in Jamia Nagar in south Delhi has led to discontent among the Muslims towards the Congress. The Samajwadi Party, concerned about its Muslim votebank, has demanded a judicial probe.
On the issue of seat sharing, Amar Singh said that the talks had been smooth.
“We had a smooth coordination committee meeting and also on seat sharing. Hopefully all the issues will be sorted out efficiently,” Singh said.
The coordination committee meeting was called to sort out the issues troubling the alliance between the two parties.
The Samajwadi Party had given crucial support to the Manmohan Singh government during the Jul 22 trust vote in parliament.
