Two carrying crackers dead in explosion near Lucknow

Lucknow : A man and his wife carrying firecrackers on a motorcycle were killed in an explosion when their vehicle skidded on the outskirts of the Uttar Pradesh capital Friday, police said.

The explosion, in which several people were injured, occurred near the Mallhaur railway station in Chinhat locality at about 2.30 p.m.

“The deceased, Rajendra, was carrying firecrackers on his motorcycle with his wife riding pillion,” Inspector I.P. Singh of Chinhat police station told IANS.

“The explosion occurred as the motorcycle skidded and fell,” Kashi Nath Singh, a government railway police superintendent, said.

The couple was declared brought dead by the doctors in a nearby hospital. The exact number of those injured is not yet clear.

“Nothing can be said right now about the intensity of the explosion and the degree of injuries sustained by the victims,” I.P. Singh said.
