Kolkata : At least 50 shanties were destoryed in a major fire that broke out at Shibpur in West Bengal’s Howrah district Tuesday night.
Sources said five fire tenders were sent to douse the fire, on Foreshore Road near the famous Botanical Gardens, that raged late into the night.
The leaping flames could be seen from a distance. Police officers went to the spot to prevent any breach of peace with the shanty-dwellers protesting against the late arrival of fire brigade personnel.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, the sources said.
