The students of the Lucknow Public Collegiate, a private intermediate school, alleged that their principal was forcing them to wear revealing outfits for the dance.

“We have been provided with skimpy costumes for the belly dance item planned for the function. When we voiced objections, the principal slapped a class 12 student who led us to his room,” a class 11 student of the school, requesting anonymity, told IANS.

According to the girls, who have to perform the belly dance with boys, the objectionable dresses were provided to them three days back.

“Since then we are complaining about the dress, but the principal has not paid any heed to our objections,” a girl student said.

Principal Javed Alam Khan admitted that he slapped one of the girls. “I could not control my anger and slapped one of them,” he said.

On the nature of dresses, Khan said: “I have assured the girls that their dresses would be changed.”

On whether the dance, which has invited objections from the girls, would be part of the annual day’s function Oct 25, Khan said: “It will be decided later.”
