U.S. to send 120 observers to monitor Bangladesh’s elections

Dhaka : The United States will dispatch 120 observers on a long-term mission to monitor the Dec. 18 parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, the private news agency UNB reported on Wednesday.

The first batch will be here in the first week of November to look over the run-up to the crucial polls, U.S. ambassador James Moriart told reporters here on Wednesday.

He hoped that the conditions were going to be in place for holding free, fair and credible elections.

Earlier, he had a meeting with Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury of Bangladesh caretaker government, discussing the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh and presidential elections in the U.S. as well as the current global financial turmoil.
