The skeleton was found Aug 23 from a deserted spot behind the garage of professors’ residence when some labourers were cleaning the area.

According to a police official, the DNA report of the skeleton is expected to be received next week and it is suspected that the dead man is Mumbai-based fashion designer Adesh Bajpai.

“Bajpai’s cousin, Vivek Trivedi, a resident of Kanpur, lodged a report with us after he went missing August 10. However, it is too early to reach any conclusion,” H.R. Sharma, Kanpur superintendent of police told reporters.

According to the complaint, Bajpai, who was on a business trip to Lucknow in early August, came to meet Trivedi Aug 10 and left for IIT Kanpur to meet some of his friends late in the evening.

“Bajpai’s cell phone details revealed that he was on the IIT campus that day and it was after this that the police decided to go for a DNA test,” the official said.

A student of IIT Kanpur is being questioned, a police official said.

The IIT administration has said it is extending all help to the police.

“Neither has the student being questioned by the police run away from the college nor has he refused to face the police. We are extending full cooperation to the police and we also want the case to be solved at the earliest,” IIT Kanpur registrar Sanjeev Kashalkar told IANS.
