“Agitated over the death of (former district party president) Venkatesh Tiwari, these people Sunday indulged in violent activities to register their protest,” district police chief Ashok Jain told IANS over the telephone.

They were booked Wednesday for attacking police and damaging public property, he added.

However, of the 500-odd people, the police have managed to arrest only 10. “Efforts are on to trace all those who resorted to violence,” said Jain.

Those behind the killing of Tiwari will also be nabbed soon, he said.

The murder sparked off violence in which the slain leader’s supporters fought a pitched battle with police, attempted to torch a police station and set afire two state transport buses, police said.

Tiwari was sprayed with bullets late Saturday night at his residence, according to police.
