New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday demanded a fair investigation in Hindu activist Pragya Singh Thakur’s alleged role in the bomb blasts in Gujarat and Maharashtra that killed six people last month.
“The BJP demands a professional and fair investigation, evidence and bringing her (Pragya Singh Thakur) to trial,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.
He said that raking up the issue of Thakur, a woman sadhvi (Hindfu missionery), is “clear hypocrisy” of the Congress and it has “no moral grounds to do that”.
“The BJP condemns the Congress’ attempt to destabilise secular tradition and peace in the country. They should self-introspect before making allegations against others,” Prasad said.
The Congress had earlier asked the BJP to come clean on Thakur’s alleged association with it.
Thakur and two of her associates were arrested last week by Mumbai Police for their supected involvement in the near-simulataneous low-intensity bomb blasts in Malegaon in Maharashtra and Modasa in Gujarat on the night of Sep 29. A total of six people — five in Malegaon and one in Modasa, were killed in these blasts.
Prasad said the Congress had time and against supported anti-national elements like Bhindranwale, given overt and covert support to the United Liberation front of Asom (ULFA) and “now they even attempted mud-slinging on dead police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma”.
While Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was a controversial Sikh leader of the Damdami Taksal, and supported the creation of the proposed Sikh theocratic state of Khalistan, the ULFA is a militant group from Assam, which seeks a sovereign Assam via an armed struggle.
Sharma, 44, suffered three bullet injuries when he went to capture five suspected terrorists hiding in south Delhi’s Batla House Sep 19. He later succumbed to the injuries in a hospital.
