Evidence against five in Delhi blasts, police tell court

By IANS,

New Delhi : Delhi Police Friday informed the Delhi High Court that they have enough evidence to prove that five suspected terrorists, arrested for their alleged involvement in the serial bomb blasts in the capital, were also linked to the explosions in Ahmedabad.

The police said they have recovered incriminating material like laptops and CDs from the suspected terrorists that pointed towards their role in the terror attack in Gujarat as well.

Delhi Police had filed a reply before Justice Kailash Gambhir on a petition challenging a lower court’s order sending the five men to police custody.

The police submitted that during the probe, they recovered two laptops, one pen drive, videocassettes and 42 CDs used by accused Mohammad Atif Ameen, Zeeshan and Shakeel.

The court is hearing a petition of the family members of the suspected terrorists pointing out that an accused can be detained for a maximum period of 15 days and the lower court erred by extending their police custody beyond that period.

The police also informed the court that all five arrested men were taken to Gujarat for interrogation.

Claiming that accused Zeeshan and Shakeel were influenced by Atif Ameen, who died during the Sep 19 Jamia Nagar shootout, the police said that the mobile phone records of the accused established their links to the blasts in Gujarat.

The police said they are yet to establish their links to the Jaipur serial blasts though the travel records collected from Indian Railways and Rajasthan Roadways had pointed towards their link with the Ahmedabad and Jaipur blasts.

The petitioners had challenged the trial court’s order of Oct 16 by which five of them – Mohammed Saif, Zeeshan Ahmad, Mohammed Shakeel, Zia-ur-Rehman and Saquib Nissar – were remanded in 12 days’ police custody.

Of these five, the family members of Zeeshan and Shakeel approached the high court seeking to quash the trial court’s order.

Zeeshan and Shakeel were arrested by the Delhi Police Sep 19 on suspicion of their involvement in serial bomb blasts and were twice remanded in police custody till Oct 16. Their police remand was extended further till Oct 27.
